Improving our waterways for future generations video transcript

Visual

A title screen using a white background appears. Centred on the screen in turquoise font, it reads: ‘A Spearhead in development: Clean Water Technology Workshop’. Underneath is the Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge logo.

As the title screen fades, we see a shot of the Wellington waterfront, which quickly switches to an image of a digital sign for the location of the SfTI National Science Challenge Clean Water Tech Workshop. Next, we see a couple of clips within the conference of various people who stand around the conference room and casually talk. Then we switch to Don Cleland as he talks to the camera with the waterfront behind him. The camera is angled so that we can see the CBD to the left and the ocean to the right. He is in a blue button-down shirt with a microphone clipped to the front. A text overlay fades in over the bottom right of the screen which reads ‘Don Cleland’ and underneath ‘SfTI Leadership Team member and Materials, Manufacturing and Design research theme leader’. A few people walk or run along the waterfront behind him as he talks.

Audio

Don Cleland:
Today's workshop is about trying to devise a research program in clean water technology.

Visual

A similar shot of Hera Smith who talks in front of the waterfront from a different spot where we see a tree just behind her and a parked car directly to the right, with the water and hills in the distance. She has short hair and is wearing a short-sleeved black top. The waterfront is busier now with many people passing behind her. In the bottom right corner, it reads ‘Hera Smith’ and underneath ‘Environmental Relationships Consultant’. We then see a couple of shots within the conference: two men stand side by side as they talk and multiple people sit at large round tables using laptops.

Audio

Hera Smith:
We have over 55 participants from a range of capabilities.

Visual

Back to Don at the waterfront before seeing more of the conference. We see a shot of a woman who sits at a round table while others sit nearby, a panning shot from the back of a room with many people who sit with open laptops while they watch a presentation, and another of a busy presentation where a woman speaks to a group of people who listen and take notes.

Audio

Don Cleland:
This is about trying to say, "Well, let's get together, collectively decide what we think is going to be the research that's going to have the biggest impact."

Visual

Now we see Tim Schurr at the waterfront. He wears a checkered shirt. In the background, a couple of people sit looking out over the water and the city can just be made out in the far left of the screen. In the bottom right of the screen the words ‘ Tim Schurr’ and beneath ‘Solutions Architect- Seequent’ appear.

Audio

Tim Schurr:
There's a lot of expertise in the room. The trick is to hold those collective brains together.

Visual

At the conference, we see a large room with people who sit at round tables looking at papers laid out in front of them before we switch to Alice Andrews in front of the waterfront. Her hair is down and she wears a red top with white and black flowers printed on it. A tree is directly behind her and the background is out of focus. On the bottom left of the screen, it reads ‘Alice Andrews’ and below ‘Environmental Engineer’. The camera then switches to a closer shot of her face.

Audio

Alice Andrews:
Some of them come from a water chemistry background, some of them come from a technology background. Working together, we can kind of come up with solutions that incorporate all of our different perspectives.

Visual

Geoff Willmott is talking to the camera in a grey jumper over a checkered shirt. A plain name badge with his name printed on it is attached to the jumper. On the right, we can see the waterfront and on the left a parked car with a building behind it. In the bottom left of the screen, it reads ‘Geoff Willmott’ and underneath ‘The University of Auckland and The MacDiarmid Institute’. This switches to him in the conference as he stands in front of a seated audience. He talks and points past the camera with both hands outstretched. We then see him talk to a man wearing glasses and a black Scion polo with a plain name badge attached that reads ‘Dean Meason’. They stand side by side and both look at a large piece of paper that Geoff holds. We see a projection screen behind them that reads ‘Our Process for the day’ with some other words below that are mostly out of focus. Next is the same scene from further away. We can see a large cross on the ground made in thick yellow tape and three papers lay on the floor similar to the one Geoff holds. He points across the room as he talks to Dean. There is a group who sits off to the right side and look at something off-screen away from the men. Next is a close up of a yellow note on the end of the yellow tape on the carpet. On it, the words ‘High Stretch’ is handwritten in black vivid. Switch to another note next to yellow tape that reads ‘High Impact’ before we switch back to Geoff at the waterfront.

Audio

Geoff Willmott:
It's a whole lot of new ideas and new connections. You have your own ideas and your own research and, in some ways, you want to advocate or represent those, and balancing that up against what the room's trying to do and what the big picture goal is.

Visual

In the conference room we see a few people seated around a table as they all write on their own sheets of paper, then another shot focuses on one man who wears glasses and appears to be concentrating on the task, then once more to a woman seen previously who works on her paper. Next, we see a man address the room full of people as he gestures.

Audio

Don Cleland:
Today, we're asking them to co-develop the research with each other. And with people bring a Māori perspective and people bring an industry perspective.

Visual

Leonie Jones now talks in front of the waterfront. She was seen in several previous shots as an attendee of the conference. She wears a grey top with a black lined pattern and her hair is pulled back. In the bottom right corner, it reads ‘Leonie Jones’ and beneath ‘Research Scientist’. People walk past behind her to the right as he speaks and there are tall buildings to the left behind a parked car.

Audio

Leonie Jones:
It's important to have a Māori voice, to ensure that the health and wellbeing of our ancestor, being the water, is taken care of.

Visual

Alice talks to the camera as before. We then see her inside the conference as she stands while she looks at a paper and addresses a group. Next, we see several people who stand in an open room with the yellow tape and lines of paper on the floor. They look down towards something on the floor off-screen.

Audio

Alice Andrews:
From a Māori perspective, a clean waterway is one that's sustainable. Can it sustain the people? Can we eat from it? And can it help us to thrive?

Visual

We see three people in conversation who sit at a long narrow table. Each has either a laptop or a tablet out in front of them. We then switch back to Leonie at the waterfront.

Audio

Leonie Jones:
Having an input to the spearhead process enables me to make sure that the Maori values are met.

Visual

Geoff talks to the camera before we switch back to the room with yellow tape on the floor. One man talks to the group while a woman moves around the room. The camera tilts down to about a dozen sheets of paper lined up unevenly between a few rows on the floor. Some have pink sticky notes on them. Back to Geoff at the waterfront.

Audio

Geoff Willmott:
The big picture motivation is around, what can we contribute to New Zealand? So, not just "Can I be part of a project?" But "Can that project have impact? Can I contribute to that impact?"

Visual

Back to the conference, Tim shows the group a piece of paper, and then gestures as he speaks before we return to the waterfront shot of him as he talks.

Audio

Tim Schurr:
Ultimately, if our waterways can improve, that would be wonderful.

Visual

We get several shots of what appears to be the same scene from different angles. It is a room full of whiteboards on the walls and there are many people who stand in a large circle. They stand and look at something off-screen, then we see the speaker who is a man in glasses, this changes to a woman addressing the group, and lastly a shot of the whole room where we can see the tape and papers on the floor as everyone looks down towards them. Back to Leonie speaking. As she finishes talking she gives a little nod.

Audio

Leonie Jones:
Bring together a good group of scientists to solve the water problem that we have and help remediate the damages that have been done to our waterways with a Māori perspective.

Visual

The scene cuts to three logos. On top is one for the Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge. On the bottom left under the words ‘Funded by’ is the logo for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. On the bottom right under the words ‘Hosted by’ is the logo for Callaghan Innovation with the subheading New Zealand’s Innovation Agency. The logos disappear revealing a web address in a turquoise font that reads stfichallenge.govt.nz.
